THE MARTIAN
  This is a still image from The Martian, the incredible film of Matt Damon as the protagonist of the narrative. In this shot you can identify that the style of lighting the director went for is a high-key type. You know this because of the way everything in the frame is lit up or you can still see some parts without hard shadows. On the other hand the natural light intensity from the sun is very harsh and surprisingly not the subject nor the setting has strong shadows so this shows a sense of surrealism which wouldn't be natural in real life. The light is so fierce it even makes the lens have a flair.

The bright light shining on Matt Damon signifies that he strong and also connotes that he's the protagonist of the film. All of the areas in the setting lit up may also suggest that he is alone and stuck in this place which is exactly what this movie is about, it could mean that he's helpless. what challenges this idea is as said before the light is shining on him reinforcing the fact that he is determined to get back home.

  In this world known film poster promoting "The Godfather" used many key elements of lighting. Starting with low-key lighting, this type of lighting means that most of the facial expressions on a person is not shown. This represent successfully in the poster, the subjects face is half lit. In order for the lighting to be low-key rather than high-key it must consist of hard/harsh lighting on one side of the subject. As well as all of those things the light is at a high position shining upon the character.

The lighting of choice has many meanings. First one is reinforcing the characters dominence just through lighting, you can see the eyes are not very clear connoting danger as well as mystery. Not forgetting the light circle behind the subjects head, its placed there to draw your attention to the protagonist just to emphasise his importance to the film. It may also connote that he's "the chosen one", this alone implies he's the main character (protagonist).

Kingsman: The Secret Service (2014)Crime film/Science fiction film

  In this scene you can see a bunch of people fighting in a church aggressively which subverts the stereotype of having manners in a holy place. Starting with costumes, in this still shot of a fight scene everybody wears sleek clothing as they are in a church what what emphasises the protagonist is the way he chose to wear a tailored suit which might suggest the protagonist is higher class than the rest of the people. The lighting is quite bright and pale suggesting its in the morning also because the sun beams are coming through the windows. The protagonists facial expressions as well as his body langue suggest that he in strong and determined to achieve his goal, it also conveys the fact he is an alpha male as he looks trained to fight as no one is messing with him.

The props used in this scene are chairs to attack with, broken wood pieces and other things used as weapons. its set in a church and its unacceptable behaviour to have fights in a holy place especially in this mass.

Batman vs Superman (2016)Fantasy/Science fiction film

  This is one of the fight scenes of Batman vs Superman, you could see at this moment Batman is dominant judging by the way he plants his foot on superman face. The costume batman wears is a heavy thick metal armour to protect himself from the natural super powers from Superman. This scene contains diamond lighting connoting that those are dark moments and it works with Batman as he's reinforces the darkness. Batman's facial expression suggests that he hates Superman and is willing to kill him. on the other hand Superman's body language suggest that he defenceless and weak this is also reinforced by the camera angle (low angle). The props are mainly uses by Batman, he uses steal gloves to attack Superman. the setting seems to be in an underground gloomy place or even an abandoned building.

The Legend Of Tarazan (2016)Drama film/Action film

In this scene you can see the iconic Tarazan in mid-air about to attack a fierce gorilla. The protagonist Tarazan is wearing tailored trousers in the fight scene which subverts the idea of being posh and classy as he is in the jungle. The lighting suggests its during the day in the jungle because everything is sort of lit because the trees are blocking most of the natural light. Tartans and the gorillas facial expression and body language says that they are angry so the get into a battle. They both have a sense of dominates implying that the gorilla is the leader and Tarazan is an alpha male. Its set in the jungle where most wild life on land exists adding to the intensity and the fact that the scene is rough and wild.

The Interview (2014)Action/Comedy film

Starting off, the denotation you see are the two protagonists in  a situation where they seem to messy up in. In the costume miss-en-scene theme u can identify that the characters are dressing up for something special, in the actual case the will meet North Korea's leader.Actors facial expression is funny as you can't take them worrying seriously because its clear that this is a comedy film. They also look ridiculous holding up their watches and talking to other people through their ear piece. speaking about their watches those are the props they use in the scene, it makes them think they are spys. The seem to be sitting on a bed in a luxurious bedroom in a posh place.

What so we learn about the character from the way he relates to his environment?

      In that scene we can clearly identify thet the character played by David Bowie isn't very comfortable in his surroundings due to the way he moves and looks very confused. What makes it worse for the character is that he's onto a mountain and as he try to get down he has a very confused look on his face suggesting he's never been around that type of environment. He wears a black coloured coat which may connote that fact that he's from somewhere mysterious and dark thoughts causing trouble. However you see him seeking forgiveness by praying which ,means that he's in trouble himself and he is worried for his life. later we see the character walk and then nearly gets hit by a car whilst crossing the road, supporting the fact that he is an outsider. After this he takes his hood off, implying he is comfortable now and leads himself to a bench to sleep on.

What expectations do we have of the genre and narrative of the film?

     This movie seems to be in the science fiction genre just judging from the opening scene because its abnormal for someone to fall to earth. Also this film can also link to the genre of mystery because it contains many enigma codes which are also conventional in the sci-fi genre. later on in the movie the protagonist will be on a mission to return home where he came from and a "helper" character type person will help him reach his goal.
