Haywire 2011 ‧ Thriller/Action

The clip starts off with two characters inter a hotel room, but suddenly the male character swings a punch towards the female character. this gives him the label of the antagonist and the female as the protagonist. They then start a physical fight in the room, this is an action code due to the level of violence involved as they try to kill each other. The female also seems to be highly trained which subverts the female stereotype as she is the protagonist rather that the prize. You can back it up because she his dominant and fierce and those characteristics are associated with men. The cinematography side of things played a leading role into making this clip convincing. The non-diegetic sound of the sound track is very suitable because it reinforces the drama and the action set pieces. The gun shot is as powerful too as it keeps the viewer glued to the screen. This is due to the visceral pleasure and diversion of the Crime film genre. It is rich with action codes from Blumler and Katz's theory because of the violence and fights as well as enigma codes later in the narrative. This includes the camera movements as well as types of shots, most of the clip is shot in a low angle showing the dominance and the action set pieces. Whats really odd is that the whole scene was taken without any post production non-diegetics that subverts the typical action film fighting scene as the music adds to the intensity and thrill, instead clear diegetic sounds such as things breaking is used to set the atmosphere and to set the mood. The pace of editing is weird as well due to the few cut and how the clips drag out. I believe that this film is target to a mixture of female and male audiences because there is a attractive dominentfemale protagonist which can appeal to both genders.

The Killer  1989 ‧ Crime film/Drama film

The clip kicks of with a disequilibrium of a shooting between the two protagonists who are saving the prize female from the gang of antagonists. The pace of editing is very quick, fast, snappy and powerful in terms of showcasing facial expressions and even actions. The sound in the scene is also powerful as it is parallel to the action on screen. The non-diegetic sound of the sound track is very suitable because it reinforces the drama and the action set pieces. The gun shot is as powerful too as it keeps the viewer glued to the screen. Judging by the genre and conventions of the narrative u can estimate that this film is targeted for young to middle aged men rather that women because of the action and violence reinforced in the film.

The Double Life of Veronique 1991 ‧ Fantasy/Drama film

The opening scene starts off with a pair of hands in a dark atmosphere pulling and stroking a box as a group of children audiences was with interest. The action is seemingly slow which makes the viewer uncomfortable and raises many question on the future narrative plot. As hands open the box, it reaches in and grabs a puppet girl. In the background you can identify a puppet of an old lady that in sitting and rocking that chair, this is another part where the viewer may ask questions. The cinematography side of things played a leading role into making this clip convincing. The non-diegetic sound of the sound track is very suitable because it reinforces the drama and the action set pieces. The gun shot is as powerful too as it keeps the viewer glued to the screen. What adds to creepy feel is that the children are all quite and fascinated by the show, which subverts the general puppet show where its meant to be fun.The camera movement is very slow as well which creates tension and suspense. out of the ordinary an individual girl looks to the side of the theatre where she spots the puppeteer as he creates the movement and story through his actions. From this point the girls interest wasn't on the the show but rather the character creating the show. The low key lighting as well as  the glow on his face may suggest he plays a big role in the narrative. The next part in the clip is that the dancing puppet dies and then the old puppet comes into the spot light where that enigma codes is answered as she covered the dead on and resurrects her as a fairy. This film could be target for female audiences as the speed of the film isn't intense and the isn't must action in the narrative.

La Haine  1995 ‧ Crime film/Drama film

A shot from behind an actor looking at himself in the mirror starts off a clip, this allows the idea of enigma codes in Blumler and Katz's theory to be played to generate questions in the viewers mind. The whole film extract was filmed in black and white to create that classical feel as it is a crime, gangster film genre. This reinforces all of the conventions in the extract. A gun signal was shown but the character which may represent that he's in the crime community which lands him in the antagonist's role. suspense was created as they pick up a book in the library and then calmed down as the protagonist placed it away, afterwards the camera follows the girl and then book blocks the camera which prevents us from seeing the character. As the conversation caries on so does the range of shots, in this case a section of dialogue wasn't shot through the over the shoulder technique but through mediam close up shots of each actors expression and face. Mulvey's updated theory of the female gaze was applied because the female viewer would find the character appealing and masculine. The performance and the speech intertwines with the actions of being angry causing it to be parallel. The next clip was of a neighbourhood presented by a dissolve transition which sets and maintains the mood. All of the characters are facing off with each other wearing dark costumes, this could connote the idea of action codes and that a piece of action will occur for example a murder or a fight of some sort. This is also reinforced when the antagonist pull out guns. As a result of his the general pace of the editing increases which give the viewer visceral pleasures. The genre for this film is Crime and Drama which appeal to mostly men rather than women.

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind  2004 ‧ Science fiction film/Drama film

The opening of the scene kicks off with a cross pan shot focusing on the protagonist and the other character. The next cut consists of a long shot or an establishing shot to showcase the setting these characters are. straight after  the clip changes to a tracking shot as the actors carry on the conversation. suspense was created as they pick up a book in the library and then calmed down as the protagonist placed it away, afterwards the camera follows the girl and then book blocks the camera which prevents us from seeing the character. As the conversation caries on so does the range of shots, in this case a section of dialogue wasn't shot through the over the shoulder technique but through mediam close up shots of each actors expression and face. The non-diegetic sound of the sound track is very suitable because it reinforces the drama and the action set pieces. The gun shot is as powerful too as it keeps the viewer glued to the screen. This is due to the visceral pleasure and diversion of the Crime film genre. The mise-en-scene at this point plays a good role specifically the male character as he wears a trench coat which is usually the piece of clothing chosen by villains from Prop's theory of character type. The lighting choice is high key lighting which allows to explore everything about the character involving his identity as well as his facial expressions. As this segment of this the choice of shots increases and the duration of the clips decreases to the increase of editing speed, simply done to create tension. The costume, narrative and mise-en-scene connotes the drama genre of the film. The audience that find this film appealing are the females in the community due to the fact it contains romantic genre conventions and has a female protagonist.
